Starting A Business? You’re Going To Need A Business Tax Receipt

Considering starting a business in Lee County? The Lee County Tax Collector’s office provides the tools and resources you need to get started. Before you are able to sell merchandise or services to the public, you’re required to have your Lee County Business Tax Receipt. Here’s how you can get started!

 

New Account

As mentioned above, anyone who wishes to start a business or has an established business from another county must obtain their Lee County Local Business Tax Receipt prior to doing business in Lee County. So, don’t wait to get your account created. It is the responsibility of the licensee or business owner to be in compliance with local, state and federal laws and regulations before obtaining a Local Business Tax Receipt. Also, keep in mind that before getting your tax receipt, you may need to register your business name with the Division of Corporations. Zoning Requirements

The next step in this process is ensuring certain zoning requirements have been checked and completed. Businesses located within the city limits of Fort Myers, Bonita Springs, Cape Coral, Sanibel, Estero and Fort Myers Beach must obtain a city local business tax receipt or city zoning before applying for a county local business tax receipt. It’s important to check to see if the location of your business allows for the type of business you want to do. Employer ID Number

An Employer ID Number (EIN) or Social Security Number is required prior to the issuance of a Local Business Tax Receipt. Be sure to complete the Form SS-4 provided by the IRS, which is  available for download on the IRS website.

 

Fees and Exemptions

As with any new venture, there will be startup costs and fees associated with opening a business in Southwest Florida. There are initial and yearly fees for local businesses depending on the start date of your new company. Some fee exemptions may apply.
